Effective Communication

Jesus told this simple story, but they had no idea what he was talking about. So he tried again. “I’ll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good—sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.

The story seemed simple enough, however, they did not understand. Jesus didn’t get angry or give up because they were being difficult, dumb or not applying their mental faculties. He did not act frustrated, but tried again, because He understood the point that it’s futile to have a conversation or teach people if you are not communicating.

How many times have we given up on people because they were dumb, not smart enough to get the simple message we were trying to convey? Like Jesus, we need to try again. If the message is that important, then it’s our duty to communicate by ensuring they understand. If they don’t get it the first time, keep trying, without being arrogant and condescending, till they do.

It’s our job to be explicit and effective in communicating and not give up on others. This requires patience and humility. They are both fruits of the Spirit, which means if you are typically not patient or humble, you can pray and ask for grace.
